Important: The heating subsidy is targeted at highest-need households. If your home is in a middle-income area and you don't hold a Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo Card, you may qualify for insulation grants but not the heat pump heating grant. The process

From eligibility check to installed heat pump

The subsidy process has five steps. We handle steps two through five — the only thing you need to do is make the first call.

Call us on 09 242 4940 and we'll check your address against the EECA system immediately. Alternatively, use EECA's online eligibility checker or call them on 0800 749 782. Takes a few minutes.

Free home assessment
We visit your home, confirm full eligibility, assess which heat pump size and type is right for your space, and provide a written quote showing the total cost and the subsidised amount you'll actually pay.

We submit the application
We complete and submit the Warmer Kiwi Homes application on your behalf with all required documentation. You don't fill in any forms. We keep you updated on progress.

Approval and scheduling
Once the application is approved we schedule installation at your convenience. You sign a contract and pay only your share — the subsidised portion is claimed directly by us from the government.

Installation and handover
We install the heat pump, commission the system, and walk you through the controls. EECA may conduct a random quality check — all our installations are carried out to full EECA standards.

Being an EECA-approved provider means we're authorised to submit applications and receive subsidy payments directly. Here's what that means for you.

Eligibility verification
We check your address, home age, card status, and existing heating against EECA's system. No guesswork — we confirm before you commit to anything.
Application completion
We complete the full Warmer Kiwi Homes application and submit all required documentation. You don't fill in a single form.
Subsidy deducted at invoice
The subsidy is deducted from your invoice directly. You pay only your share — we claim the subsidised portion from EECA separately. No upfront full payment and rebate process.
EECA-standard installation
All installations are carried out to EECA's technical standards. EECA randomly selects completed jobs for quality inspection — we pass every time.
Approved brands and models
We only install EECA-approved heat pump models through the subsidy programme. Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, and Panasonic residential models all qualify.
Post-installation support
Warranty registration, filter cleaning guidance, and ongoing service support. We're still here after the installation is complete.

Additional funding you may not know about

The main Warmer Kiwi Homes subsidy isn't the only financial support available. These are worth knowing about.

Community organisation top-ups
Some regions offer additional funding through community trusts, councils, and health boards that can reduce or eliminate the homeowner contribution entirely. We advise on any additional funding available in your area during the assessment.
Minor repairs funding
Warmer Kiwi Homes also funds minor repairs needed before installation — creating access to inaccessible ceiling or underfloor areas, small roof or subfloor leak repairs, earthing system repairs, and LED downlight replacement where older styles are incompatible with insulation.
Insulation grants
If your home lacks ceiling or underfloor insulation, Warmer Kiwi Homes also funds this — and insulation is often a prerequisite for the heating grant. The insulation programme covers more households than the heating grant, including middle-income areas at 50% funding.
Healthy Homes Standards (rentals)
The heat pump subsidy is for owner-occupiers, not landlords. But landlords must still meet Healthy Homes Standards heating requirements. If you're a tenant whose rental lacks adequate heating, your landlord is legally required to provide it — we install for landlords too.
Recent programme changes

What's changed in 2026

Wood and pellet burner grants ended — January 2026
From 9 January 2026, Warmer Kiwi Homes no longer accepts new applications for wood burner or pellet burner grants. Heat pumps remain the primary — and now only — heating option funded under the programme. If you were considering a wood burner through the subsidy, a heat pump is now the subsidised route to go.

How quickly can I find out if I'm eligible?

Do I need insulation before I can get the heat pump subsidy?

Yes — homes must have ceiling and underfloor insulation to EECA standards to qualify for the heating grant. If your home currently lacks this insulation, the good news is that the insulation itself is also funded under Warmer Kiwi Homes. We can assess and arrange both through the same programme, often in a single project.
What does "no existing fixed heater" mean exactly?

The programme is designed for homes without adequate heating. If there's already an operational heat pump, wood burner, pellet burner, flued gas heater, or central heating in the living area, the home doesn't qualify for a heating grant. Portable heaters (oil column, fan heaters) don't count as fixed heaters — having only portable heaters still allows you to qualify.
Can the subsidy be used for multi-room or ducted systems?

The programme primarily funds high wall heat pump installations sized for a single living area. Multi-room and ducted systems may be considered in some circumstances but are assessed on a case-by-case basis. For most applicants, the subsidised installation is a single high wall unit for the main living area.
How long does the process take from application to installation?

Timeframes vary based on EECA application processing times and installation scheduling. In our experience the process from initial assessment to completed installation typically takes two to six weeks. We keep you informed throughout and work to schedule installation as promptly as possible once approved.
I'm a landlord — can I get the subsidy for my rental?

No — the Warmer Kiwi Homes subsidy is for owner-occupiers only, not investment properties. However, landlords must still meet Healthy Homes Standards heating requirements, which require a fixed heater capable of heating the main living area to 18°C. We install heat pumps for rental properties at standard rates and can advise on the minimum requirements.
