How it works

Four-way airflow — the key difference

A standard high wall heat pump pushes conditioned air in one direction. You get a warm zone near the unit and cooler areas further away — particularly noticeable in larger rooms.

A ceiling cassette pushes air outward in four directions simultaneously from the centre of the ceiling. This distributes heat evenly across the entire room, eliminating hot and cold spots regardless of room size or layout.

The unit itself sits in your ceiling cavity, connected to the outdoor unit via refrigerant lines and electrical cabling routed through the ceiling. From inside the room, only the grille is visible — flush with the ceiling.

Ceiling cassette FAQ

Answers to the questions we get asked most about ceiling cassette installations.

How much ceiling cavity space do I need?

Most ceiling cassettes require 300–400mm of ceiling cavity depth, plus space for refrigerant lines, drainage, and electrical connections. We check this during your free site assessment before recommending a ceiling cassette. Some older South Auckland homes with shallow ceiling cavities may need a different solution.

How long does installation take?

Ceiling cassette installation is more involved than a standard high wall unit — typically a full day. We carry out ceiling modifications, unit mounting, refrigerant line and drainage routing, and electrical connections all in one visit, then test and commission the system before leaving.

Can they be installed in homes with raked or sloped ceilings?

Standard ceiling cassettes require flat ceiling installation. There are specialised models designed for angled ceilings, but these are less common and need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. We'll advise the best option during your site visit.

Are they harder to service than wall-mounted units?

The filter grilles are accessible from below and can be cleaned without special equipment. Deep cleaning of the coils requires access to the unit in the ceiling cavity — we use specialist pressure cleaning equipment designed specifically for this. Annual servicing is recommended, same as any heat pump.

What happens if there's a drainage issue?

Proper drainage installation is critical for ceiling cassettes — water leaking into your ceiling is the last thing you want. We install condensate drainage correctly with the right fall and backflow prevention. Most drainage issues seen in the field are the result of poor initial installation, not equipment failure.

Can I control it from my phone?

Most modern ceiling cassette models from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, and Panasonic support WiFi connectivity via an optional adaptor or built-in. This allows smartphone control, scheduling, and in some models, integration with voice assistants. See our WiFi control page for more detail.
