Floor mounted units aren't always the first recommendation — but in the right situation they're the best solution.

Walls dominated by windows

Many South Auckland homes — particularly older character properties — have exterior walls that are mostly glass. A floor unit goes below the windows where there's clear wall space.

Built-in wardrobes and joinery

Built-ins that run floor to ceiling leave little usable wall space for a standard high wall unit. Floor mounted units fit into the remaining wall space without compromise.

Accessibility requirements

Controls and filter access are at a comfortable height — no reaching overhead. Suits households where mobility or reach is a consideration.

Low ceilings or short walls

The questions we get asked most about floor mounted units.

How much floor space do they take up?

Most floor mounted units are around 60cm wide, 20–30cm deep, and 55–65cm tall — roughly the footprint of a small bedside table. They need clearance around the sides and front for airflow, but they're not space-dominators. We'll confirm the exact dimensions during your site assessment.

Can I put anything on top of or against the unit?

No. The top and front of the unit need to remain clear for proper airflow. Blocking the air intake or outlet will reduce efficiency and could cause the unit to overheat. It's not a shelf.

How quiet are they?

Modern floor units from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, and Panasonic typically operate at 19–25 decibels on quiet mode — about the same level as a quiet whisper. They're well suited to bedrooms and living areas where noise matters.

Do they heat and cool?

Yes — floor mounted units are reverse-cycle heat pumps, meaning they heat in winter and cool in summer. The same unit handles both, so you don't need separate systems.

Are they harder to service than wall units?

Actually easier. Everything is at a comfortable working height — no ladders required for filter cleaning or annual servicing. The filters are typically accessible from the front and easy to remove and rinse yourself between services.

Are floor units more expensive than high wall units?

The units themselves tend to cost slightly more than equivalent high wall models from the same brand. Installation costs are comparable. We quote both options where either would work so you can make an informed decision.
